Angela Creamer

Angela joined the club in 1968, when she was 12. In her first year she made the Rotherham Schools team, the next year she made the final, and the next year won the final.

She started out as a sprinter, and gradually increased her distance through 400 metres, then 800m. Angela was coached by Alan Simpson.

Her progress continued with wins in the Yorkshire 800m, then the Northern 800m.

In 1975 Angela won the AAA’s 800m Championship in 2:05.14. She repeated the win in 1976 in 2:04.61.

On June 5th , in the Kraft Games at Crystal Palace, which was the Olympic trial, Angela set a new pb and was the winner in 2:03 .5.. All the first three finishers were given the same time. As the photo shows this was an incredibly close finish. Angela was 4th with less than 150m to go, but finished very strongly.

These wins meant selection for the UK Olympics team for the 800m.

True to form Angela produced her best ever time, of 2:03.48 at the Montreal Olympics. This performance still places Angela in the UK All time best performance lists.

Angela looks back now on the performance with pride, but with some sadness and bitterness, since it subsequently emerged that the East Europeans and Russians were using various stimulants and illegal procedures to achieve their winning performances.

Angela married Bruce Green – of Sale Harriers – and is now living in Cheshire.

She still maintains contact with the club, and recently presented the awards at the 2005/6 presentation evening.
